Newcastle United FC are recruiting a Performance Scientist to join their Men’s First Team Performance department.

The role will focus on transforming complex performance and medical data into clear, actionable insights, helping inform decisions around player performance, physical development and health within an elite football environment.

The Role

Working collaboratively across Performance, Medical, Data Insights, Academy and Women’s teams, the Performance Scientist will combine analytical expertise with applied sports science to support evidence-based decision-making.

The position provides an opportunity to work at the intersection of performance science, data analytics and player health, using large and complex datasets to generate practical insights for coaches and multidisciplinary practitioners.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will contribute to:

• Analysis and interpretation of performance and medical data.
• Producing actionable insights around player performance, physical development and health.
• Managing and analysing large, complex datasets.
• Developing performance reporting and visualisation using Power BI and Excel.
• Using Python for data analysis and custom visualisation.
• Applying research methodology and scientific evidence within elite sport.
• Leading data projects from initial planning through to delivery.
• Communicating complex analytical findings clearly to practitioners and decision-makers.
• Working collaboratively within the club's multidisciplinary performance environment.

Essential Requirements

Candidates should demonstrate:

• BSc in Sports Science, Data Science, Statistics or another relevant STEM discipline.
• Significant experience working with data within professional sport, ideally team sport.
• Strong understanding of performance and medical analytics.
• Experience applying research methodology and evidence to practice.
• Experience working effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
• Advanced Microsoft Power BI and Excel capability.
• Experience managing and analysing large, complex datasets.
• Coding capability, preferably Python.
• Ability to translate complex analysis into clear, actionable performance insights.
• Experience leading data projects from planning through to successful delivery.
• Ability to work independently and take ownership of projects.
• Full UK driving licence.

Desirable

Additional experience or qualifications in the following would be advantageous:

• MSc in Sports Science, Data Science, Statistics or related STEM discipline.
• Postgraduate qualification in Sports Analytics.
• CASES/BASES accreditation, or ability to achieve accreditation within an agreed timeframe.
• Microsoft SQL.
• Sports epidemiology.
• Previous experience within elite football.

The successful candidate will join Newcastle United's Performance department, working across coaching, performance, analysis, medical and player-care disciplines to support the Men's First Team.
