Department: Baseball Operations, Research & DevelopmentReports to: Assistant Director of Development, Research & DevelopmentClassification: Full-Time/ExemptLocation: Houston, TX Summary/Objective: The Houston Astros are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join our Software Development team within the Research and Development department. This role is ideal for a seasoned developer who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and is passionate about building scalable, maintainable systems that directly impact baseball decision-making.You’ll work across the full stack—from ingesting and transforming data to building intuitive front-end applications. You’ll help shape architectural decisions, modernize legacy systems, and champion engineering excellence across the department. Essential Functions & Responsibilities:Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Design, build, and maintain full-stack applications that support Baseball OperationsBuild scalable, automated systems with longevity and maintainability in mindModernize legacy codebases while ensuring continuity of critical systemsEnsure adherence to best practices in software development, including code reviews, testing,continuous integration, and documentationServe as a technical leader and mentor, while remaining hands-on as an individual contributorParticipate in a rotating on-call schedule to address any urgent issues with our software systemsPerform other duties as assigned Experience & Skills: 5+ years of professional software development experienceProven experience working across the stack: DevOps tooling, backend (C#, Python), frontend (Javascript/Typescript, React.js), and data pipelines (SQL Server, Databricks)Strong understanding of system architecture and design patternsExperience maintaining and refactoring legacy codebasesProficiency in modern development practices: testing, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, etc.Self-starter with excellent communication and collaboration skillsExperience influencing others and advocating for technical excellence while being open to change when neededExperience working with sports data is a plus Work EnvironmentThis job operates in an office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones and photocopiers. The noise level is usually moderate but can be loud within the stadium environment. Physical DemandsWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit (for long periods of time); use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear.
